The same diseases affect a significant portion of the senior population in India, according to psychiatrist Dr Shailesh Jha of Indraprastha Apollo Sarthak Mental Health Services. He continues, “Yet this is preventable.”
What motivates elderly depression that may result in extreme measures?
Dr Anand primarily blames it on a sense of abrupt inadequacy in society and post-retirement emptiness. “Pushing the old to the bottom of the trough is a socially acceptable role imposition that stems from sentiments of loneliness, detachment, loss of purpose in life, and abandonment. They cannot express their feelings further if they do not have a companion or peer group. They most definitely don’t do it with their kids, who are accustomed to seeing them in a particular light and acting predictably without recognising that the individual has experienced a radical transformation. My patients’ children tell me, “But we talk to our parents all the time.” Is anyone paying attention, I wonder? She queries.
The majority of mental health specialists have observed tendencies towards self-harm in individuals who are typically silent. According to Dr. Jha, “A lot of late-life cases I see typically have an untreated mental health issue that’s exacerbated with age.” This is because mental health is stigmatised.
There are instances when the body functions first, and the mind follows. Therefore, if it is affected, the patient’s mental health profile is impacted. According to Dr. Anand, “Some elders might just tip over the edge, unable to bear the pain of their long-suffering disease or become a burden to others.”
Older adults may feel irrelevant and out of touch in a world that is changing quickly due to outside influences. According to Dr. Anand, “A lot of this has to do with financial dependence and lack of knowledge to manage one’s finances and investments.” A trigger is this financial desertion by the family and society, which has a fixed retirement age. According to Dr. Jha, “Some elders are uncomfortable navigating a digitally wired society.”
